WE CAN’T BREATHE

We Can’t Breathe is more than a music video and more than a film. It is a visual and poetic piece of art that both documents the moments and joins the voices of those crying out for much needed change in this time of racial injustice.”

- Paul Sloop, Short Films Programming Manager at Cleveland International Film Festival

During a global pandemic, the killing of one man sparked the biggest social movement in history. Cities all over the world erupted in protest, fueled by centuries of racial tension. To sit idly by during this historic event was not an option. We picked up our cameras, our masks, and our courage, and proceeded to film 25 protests throughout Los Angeles County with the goal of capturing the spirit and passion of the moment. The film, along with the original song by Rayna Zemel, Chief Wakil, and Kelli Wakili, is a tribute to those who have lost their lives due to police brutality, and to those who risk their health and safety to stand up for change.

IMPACT STRATEGY:

The impact strategy for “We Can’t Breathe” centers on leveraging powerful storytelling to amplify awareness of racial injustice, inspire activism, and support concrete community initiatives. The film captures the urgent call for systemic change, highlighting the resilience and courage of protestors demanding justice amid a global pandemic.

By partnering with local activists, the film facilitated targeted screenings and community dialogues that mobilized resources and encouraged collective action. These efforts directly contributed to raising $10,000 for programs dedicated to providing food and essential services to Los Angeles's houseless population.

Through this strategic approach, “We Can’t Breathe” underscores the transformative potential of documentary filmmaking, driving social awareness, fostering empathy, and creating meaningful, measurable impact within communities.
